About

How a chapter is made

The same steps, in the same order, for every chapter: that is what keeps a long story consistent.

Written, or retold

A story of our own is planned whole, then written chapter by chapter, each one picking up where the last stopped. A retelling carries a public-domain or permitted work into its new setting: names, places, food, clothing and the texture of daily life move, while its plot, its people and the rules of its world stay put.

Checked against the story so far

A running record of the story (its people, places, rules and what has happened) is kept up to date as each chapter is made, and every new chapter is checked against it for contradictions. A name, once chosen, stays the same name.

Read by a person

Nothing reaches this site without a person reading it and agreeing it is good. A chapter that changes after it is published comes down until it has been read again.
